Stress-Free Moving: Tips from the Pros for Your Next Move

Make your next move easier with these pro tips! From smart packing hacks and hiring reputable movers to what to do on moving day, our guide helps homeowners enjoy a stress-free moving experience.

Moving into a new home is exciting – a fresh start in a new space. But let’s be honest, moving can also be one of the most stressful life events. The good news is, with a bit of planning and some insider know-how, you can significantly reduce the stress and even enjoy the process. As a professional moving company (Tri-State One Rate Movers) with decades of experience, we’ve gathered our top tips to help homeowners achieve a smooth, stress-free move.

1. Start Planning Early

Time is your friend when it comes to moving. As soon as you know you’ll be moving, start a checklist and timeline. Declutter and organize well in advance – there’s no sense in paying to move items you don’t need. Go room by room and decide what will move, be donated, or tossed. Begin collecting or purchasing packing supplies (boxes, tape, markers, bubble wrap) a few weeks out. If you have the luxury of time, packing a little each day is far less overwhelming than a last-minute rush. Pro tip: Aim to have everything non-essential packed a day or two before Moving Day, so you’re not frantically boxing up the kitchen that morning.

2. Smart Packing Strategies

Carefully unloading the moving truck

How you pack can make a huge difference in the moving experience. Here are some proven packing hacks:

  • Pack by Room and Label Clearly: It may sound obvious, but labeling boxes with not just their contents but the destination room in your new home saves loads of time during unloading. Use a big marker (and maybe colored stickers for different rooms) to mark each box “Kitchen,” “Master Bedroom – Bedding,” etc. This way movers (and you) can get each box to the right spot quickly.

  • Heavy Items in Small Boxes: Books, files, or canned goods are heavy! Use smaller boxes for dense, heavy items and save larger boxes for lighter bulky things like linens or pillows. Your back (and the movers) will thank you.

  • Protect Fragile Items: Wrap breakables in bubble wrap or paper and clearly mark those boxes as “Fragile.” Pack dishes vertically (like records in a box) with padding around – they’re less likely to break that way. For electronics or TVs, if you don’t have the original boxes, wrap them in blankets or thick bubble wrap and mark which side is the screen.

  • Essentials Box: Set aside a “Day 1 Essentials” box or two. This includes things you’ll need immediately upon arrival: toiletries, a couple of days’ clothing, important documents, basic tools (screwdriver, utility knife), chargers for electronics, medications, and some snacks/water. Keep this box with you in your car. This way, you’re not opening 10 boxes to find your toothbrush or the coffee maker on the first morning in your new place!

3. Hire Reputable Movers (And Book Early)

If you plan to use professional movers, choose a reputable company and book well ahead of time, especially for peak moving seasons (summer and end-of-month moves). Do your research: get at least three in-home or virtual estimates, ask for proof of insurance, and read reviews. Remember, a legitimate moving company will never ask for a large cash deposit upfront – be wary of scams. It’s also helpful to understand your estimate type (binding vs. non-binding) so there are no surprises on cost.

Before booking, verify the movers are licensed. For interstate moves, the company should have a USDOT number. You can check their complaint history on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration website. Speaking of which, the FMCSA offers a “Protect Your Move” resource with tips on avoiding moving fraud fmcsa.dot.gov – definitely worth a read if you’re hiring movers for a long-distance relocation.

On moving day, communicate clearly with the crew. Do a walkthrough of your home pointing out any particularly fragile or valuable items. If you’ve color-coded or labeled boxes by room, explain your system. A good moving team will appreciate the info and handle your belongings with care.

4. Don’t Overlook Moving Logistics

Every move has its unique logistical challenges. Think ahead about things like parking the moving truck and reserving elevators if you’re in an apartment or condo. Some urban areas or buildings require a permit for moving trucks or have specified moving hours. Handle those details in advance to avoid last-minute chaos. Measure large furniture and doorways at both your current and new home – will that sectional sofa fit through the front door or down the basement stairs? Better to plan ahead than to be surprised (and stuck) on moving day.

If you’re moving long-distance, keep in mind delivery windows. Your shipment might not arrive the exact same day as you if it’s a cross-country move. Plan for a short period without your items – pack extra essentials and perhaps arrange temporary furniture if needed. Also, for interstate moves, ensure you have a full inventory of your items and understand the insurance/valuation options your mover provides.

5. Take Care of Yourself and Your Family

things to remember when moving, moving in, packing, packing trouble

Amidst the hustle, don’t forget the human side of moving. It can be emotional, especially for kids or pets who don’t understand what’s going on. Involve children by letting them pack a special box of their favorite items and reassure them about the new home. For pets, consider keeping them in a quiet room on moving day or with a friend to reduce anxiety (and prevent escape attempts out the open doors). Make sure to have food and water handy for both pets and people during the move.

It’s easy to get caught up in the tasks and forget to eat or rest. Keep some snacks and drinks available. Stay hydrated – moving is physical work, even if you have movers doing the heavy lifting, you’ll be active all day. Dress comfortably and safely (sturdy shoes, no loose clothing that could snag). And once the truck is loaded and you’re heading to the new place, give yourself a moment to breathe – the big work is done, and you’re on to an exciting new chapter.

6. Post-Move: Essentials First, then Settle In

When you arrive at your new home, prioritize unpacking the essentials box and making up the beds first. Trust us, by the end of the day you’ll be grateful to take a shower and fall into a made bed, even if the rest of the house is in boxes. Plug in the fridge and any appliances that were moved and do a quick check that utilities (water, electricity, gas, internet) are up and running. Take photos of your furniture and electronics as you unwrap them, in case any damage occurred (so you can file a claim promptly, if needed). But hopefully, with reputable movers, all will be in good shape.

Unpacking can be done over several days – you don’t have to do it all at once. Start with the kitchen and necessities, then go room by room. This is also a chance to re-organize items as you find new places for them. Remember those labels you put on the boxes? They’ll make unpacking much easier since you know what’s what.

Finally, take time to celebrate your successful move! Order a pizza or takeout, and toast (even if with sparkling water) to your new home. You did it – the stressful part is over, and a new adventure begins.

Moving doesn’t have to be a nightmare of chaos and panic. By following these tips and leaning on professionals where needed, you can turn moving day into a manageable, positive experience. As a wise mover once said, “Preparation is the key to a smooth move.”

If you want to truly take the stress off, consider hiring a full-service moving team like ours.
